NEC - Genting Arena Part of the NEC (National Exhibition Centre) complex near Birmingham UK. Like many of the UK’s large scale concert venues the Genting Arena has had several names, as corporate sponsors have changed. From its opening in 1982 until 2009 it was known as the NEC Arena. From 2009 – 2014 it was called the LG Arena and during their tenure it was renovated at a cost of £29 million. Since the beginning of 2015 it is known as the Genting Arena. Capacity is around 16,000 and whilst it hosts mostly large scale music concerts it is also popular as a stage for well known comedians. It is one of two large scale venues in the Birmingham area (the other is the Barclaycard NIA). NB ...... The NEC and the Genting Arena are not in, or close to, Birmingham City centre. The NEC website claims its 8 miles from Birmingham centre, Google maps states that it’s 12 miles+ from the centre (it’s 11.8 miles from the city of Coventry). It’s close to Birmingham airport and easily reached by train from the centre of Birmingham. There are also hotels on site and the NEC has a staggering 29,000* car parking spaces spread around the site . *The Genting Arena site puts the figure at 16,000. * December 2018 - now known as Resorts World Arena Birmingham
