Opened in 1995 Manchester Arena is one of the World’s busiest and most popular venues serving over a million visitors a year. It draws visitors from all over the UK and beyond and it is the largest seated indoor venue in the UK with a maximum capacity of 21,000. It was part of an unsuccessful Manchester bid to host the Olympic games in both 1996 and 2000 but later used for the 2002 Commonwealth games. The arena has undergone several name changes due to various sponsorship deals, most recently with the now defunct phones 4U. It’s fair to say that Manchester Arena is probably used for a greater diversity of events than similar venues in other large cities as, in addition to large scale concerts and family shows, it hosts sporting events including boxing and swimming and is also home to several local sports teams. The arena is located west of Manchester city centre above the Victoria station and is thus easy to reach via public transport. Known as a vibrant and friendly town Manchester has an excellent infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, and entertainments, due in no small part to the huge number of visitors generated by its two world class football teams.
