Situated in the south eastern part of London’s west end theatre district, the Aldwych Theatre 

was designed by W.G.R. Sprague who is responsible for several west end theatres constructed 

around the turn of the 20th century. It opened at the end of 1905. The seated is capacity is 

1200 spread over three levels. Throughout its history it has catered to a variety of genres 

including ballet, pantomime, farces, musicals, comedies, and dramas. For over twenty years 

from 1860 – 1982 it was the London residence of the Royal Shakespeare Company. More 

recently it ran the London stage version of Dirty Dancing for approximately five years between 

2006 – 2011. The Aldwych is within easy reach of both Holborn and Covent Garden tube 

stations and is also relatively close to both Temple tube and Charing Cross station.
