The New Mermaid Theatre opened in 1959 in Puddle Dock in the City of London, becoming notable as the first newly constructed theatre within the City’s boundaries since the time of Shakespeare. Since the 1980’s the Mermaid has had a troubled history with several changes of both ownership and management. It was the subject of proposed redevelopment in 2002 but the plans were blocked. It has functioned in recent years mainly as a conference venue and lost its theatre status in 2008. At the time of writing redevelopment plans are again in motion and it seems almost certain to be another victim of London’s increased gentrification politics.
